The shallow gravel aquifer is a groundwater body that underlies most of the
floor of the Walla Walla valley and extends up several of the primary stream
corridors into the Blue Mountain foothills. The shallow gravel aquifer is
generally an unconfined surface aquifer that is hydraulically connected to most
of the streams that flow across the floor of the Walla Walla watershed.
Anthropogenic influences have modified the recharge of this system and are the
propable culprit for observed changes to the system.
In response to indicators of change in the shallow aquifer, planning efforts to
address the change as well as pilot projects to test methods for recharging the
aquifer have been ongoing since 2004. Documents produced as part of this effort
are available below. If you have further questions please
contact the Watershed Planning Department.

Strategic Plan for SAR in the Walla Walla Basin
|
This Strategic Plan is intended to identify, enable and inform adaptive actions that water stewards can take to improve the flow of water into, through and out of the shallow gravel aquifer. Recommended actions include monitoring and evaluation, goal setting, and design, permitting, funding and implementation of aquifer recharge systems.
